Caring For Generations
My family and I are so grateful for the Foundation's Benevolent Assistance program.
By Janis Fudge, a resident at Westminster Winter Park
Many years ago, my mother lived at Westminster Towers, in downtown Orlando. She was independent and loved to shop, have her weekly hair appointment and driving others to church, and generally what I called "be-bopping" all over the place. She loved to walk, to laugh and to reminisce with her new friends at her new home.
After five years, we noticed some of her metal abilities beginning to slip. She had several stays in the hospital and ultimately we all determined that it was time for her to move to Assisted Living, where she could have the support she needed, and enjoy more safety and security. The cost of this care was much higher and it wasn't long before she began to deplete her life savings.
My brothers and I met with the Executive Director to learn more about the Benevolent Assistance program. It was very helpful for all of us—and reassuring that everything would be kept private. No one would know she was getting this assistance, and most of all, her services and care would never be affected. The Benevolent Assistance would pay most of her monthly service fee, and left enough for personal expenses from her monthly income.
This amazing program was an answer to our prayers. My family had a weight lifted and my mother was able to receive the care she needed and continue to be with friends she loved and laughed with for the rest of her life.
Loving people made and make this program possible. Without the generosity of caring, loving people our outcome would have been so different.
Today, I live at Westminster Winter Park and "paying it forward" has a new meaning for me, because I know that whatever I can contribute to the Benevolent Assistance Fund will help some other resident and their family have peace of mind. Whatever hurdles may come, I know that this is my home and I can enjoy the security of knowing that I will be comfortable for the rest of my life.
